First annual PR “Reader’s Choice” Blog Awards

boynom2If you’re like me, you read blogs as a way to keep up on trends, learn new skills and connect with brilliant minds across the country. But, as I’ve followed these blogs and gotten to know many of the authors behind the posts, I’ve been surprised by the lack of recognition many of these folks–and their blogs–get.

Oh sure, there’s the Ad Age list and a handful others, but there’s a lack of formal recognition from our peers.

What about YOU? The folks who read these blogs each day. The folks who are committed members of the PR/social medial blogging community. The folks who are adding to the discussions in the comments day in and day out. Are your voices captured anywhere?

As far as I can tell–they’re aren’t. So, I’m proposing we rectify that situation post haste.

Introducing the first annual PR “Reader’s Choice” Blog Awards.

We’ll start with four different categories:

* Best up-and-coming PR blog (blogging less than a year)

* Most educational PR blog

* Most thought-provoking PR blog

* PR Blog of the Year

As a first step in this process, I need your help. If you have a nominee for one of the categories above, please do one of the following:

* Send me a note at arik.hanson@gmail.com
* DM me via Twitter (@arikhanson)
* Leave a comment below

You’ll have a week to submit nominees. As of midnight next Monday, May 25, I’ll add up the submissions. The top 5 in each category will then be nominees and official voting will begin May 26 via SurveyMonkey.

So, please send me a note with your favorite blogs and submissions and help me recognize the truly fantastic PR blogs we all read each day!

    Hmmm, so many great blogs to choose from, Arik. I’ll have to think on this and get back to you with the required suggestions.

    Great idea, by the way – good on you, sir! :)

    Awesome idea Arik. I wish I had taken the time to pull something like this together. You are a true leader in our industry.

  3. Ryan Mathre  on May 19th, 2009

    Great idea Arik. I’d like to nominate Amy Mengel’s, Mengel Musings for Best Up-and Coming Blog. In only a few short months she has become a must read for me.

    Also, thoughts on one more category: “Blog post of the year.”

  7. Kasey Skala  on May 19th, 2009

    For me, the “Best up-and-coming” has to go to Sasha Hilma’s Little Pink Book. We’ve all read the blogs that rehash old material that we’ve seen elsewhere. Sasha fills her blog with info that not only is interesting, but is relevant. Her passion and knowledge about the PR industry comes off in her blog. If you want to learn from a PR whiz and converse with someone who knows their stuff, then go to her blog.

    Arik – a really cool idea my friend. Here’s one I have recently been introduced to with a pretty cool concept. The guy who writes it is named David Loomis, and he takes a random word everyday and talks about its application to marketing.

    Check it out – http://innov8.typepad.com/loomis/

    Great idea Arik! Can’t wait to see the other nominations! So many blogs, so little time.

    Have to nominate one of my favorite new/ up and coming blogs Journalistics, by Jeremy Porter http://blog.journalistics.com/ Lots of great insights at the crossroads of PR, Journalism and social media, along with useful resources and tips. I am sure @journalistics will receive many nominations, and I am proud to be a fan…

  12. KirstenLG  on May 19th, 2009

    I’d like to nominate the Communications Conversations blog (www.arikhanson.com) for most thought-provoking PR Blog. :)

    And the MNPR Blog (www.mnprblog.com) for PR Blog of the year.

    Love this concept! Off the top of my head, my favorites are David Mullen and Danny Brown. But, I may have a couple more to add. I can’t wait to come back to your blog after the nominations are closed and find a bunch of top-notch new blogs to add to my reader.

  17. Sasha  on May 20th, 2009

    Hi there!

    Great idea Arik :-)

    Hmm, since I don’t think I can nominate myself (http://sashahalima.com/blog/) as I have seen other doing already (Thanks for the love guys! :-) ) — I’m going to nominate @journalistics for best up and coming blog: http://blog.journalistics.com/

    I actually venture over there quite often to see what’s going on.

    * Most educational PR blog

    While, it’s not updated as much as I would wish, Brian Solis teaches me lots!

    http://www.briansolis.com/

    * Most thought-provoking PR blog

    I really like Danny Brown’s. He finds some of the most “out there” stuff.

    http://dannybrown.me/

    * PR Blog of the Year

    Oooh, tough one! I’ll come back and let you know that one. I don’t know yet… lol

  18. Debby  on May 20th, 2009

    Just started recently and already a fun, interesting, informative read.

  19. Debby  on May 20th, 2009

    sorry…hit submit too early…aerocles@wordpress.com

  20. Danny Brown  on May 20th, 2009

    Hey there Arik,

    Okay, like a bad smell that you can’t quite get rid of even with multi-blasts of Febreze, I’m back to add my two cents. :)

    * Best Up-and-Coming PR blog – The Lost Jacket by Stuart Foster ( http://thelostjacket.com/ ). It’s heavily slanted to social media but I think that’s where a lot of PR needs to learn from today, so Stuart gets my vote here.

    * Most Educational PR blog – The Bad Pitch Blog ( http://badpitch.blogspot.com/ ). This blog never disappoints and never fails to tackle some of the subjects that other PR bloggers shy away from.

    * Most Thought-Provoking PR blog – I’d have to go with Dave Fleet here ( http://davefleet.com ) as the guy is on the top of his game at the minute and every post is almost like a home run. Of course, Dave being British he won’t care too much about home runs, so let’s say it’s the equivalent of England beating Germany in the World Cup final.

    * PR Blog of the Year – Tough one. So many to choose from. But, if I have to select one, I’d go with PR Newser from the MediaBistro guys ( http://www.mediabistro.com/prnewser/ ). Their own team are hugely knowledgeable and the guest writers they have are outstanding.

    So, there you go, the votes are in from the Scottish contingent. Thanks for doing this, Arik, and look forward to seeing the results of round one nominations.

    Go Adam Lambert!! :)

  21. Shonali Burke, ABC  on May 20th, 2009

    I’d have to say PR Conversations for best educational as well as often most thought-provoking. Some of the brightest minds in the business blog there, and I love its global perspective. http://www.prconversations.com

    Thanks for the opportunity, Arik!

  22. Jean  on May 20th, 2009

    I’d like to enter this blog in the “most thought-provoking” category – Thanks!

    One of my favourite PR blogs is http://storylinepr.wordpress.com/ – A great resource for anyone looking to learn more about PR basics and understand how to work with the media – fabulous content with practical advice… might fit best into the most educational category.

  29. Jason Sprenger  on May 26th, 2009

    Ah yes…a few of my ideas, sans categories:

    –MNPR: the original PR blog, and still one of the best.

    –Amy Mengel: up-and-coming is definitely true. Very relevant and valuable

    –Ryan Stephens Marketing: one of the only blogs I read that always provokes fresh thought

    –LAF (Lauren Fernandez): there aren’t many young pros out there with the command of SM and PR like Lauren, and she shows it off on her blog.

    Thanks. Looking forward to the awards.

    @JasonSprenger

    * Educational: Dave Fleet. Always learn something over there.

    * Thought provoking: Again, gotta go with two: My Twitter Jesus, Danny Brown. The hardest working blogger in PR (Danny, I just TMed that catch phrase, by the way). And Shonali Burke’s blog: Waxing Unlyrical. Great posts that always get my noodle turning.
