Five Good Minutes with David Mullen

Today I’m starting a new series at Communications Conversations titled “Five Good Minutes.” The idea? To share five good minutes with folks I spend time with from week to week. I meet up with so many incredibly smart people–whether it’s for business, professional development or just for fun.

Earlier this week, I was incredibly fortunate to finally have the opportunity to meet David Mullen in person. This was a big deal for me, personally, as David was one of the first people I reached out to and connected with online. He gave me advice and ideas that I use on a regular basis. And, without overstating it completely, I really don’t think I’d be where I am today (on the blogging front) without the support and encouragement from David. So, thank you, David. And, here’s five good minutes.

Note: In this first video I misspoke and referred to the segment as “3 Good Minutes.” The series will be titled 5 Good Minutes.

Nice Job Arik - keep it up.

Matt, Sara, Allan, Justin: Thanks for the comments. I'm looking forward to building out this series.

David: I think my favorite part of your note was the "sweet old southern lady sipping sweet tea on her front porch" comment.

Polly: I actually had one of those tripods and it recently broke. Clearly, I need to pick up another ASAP!

Kellye: I can trust you'll always keep me honest. Wasn't expecting Mr. Mullen to drone on for that long ;)

That was actually Seven Good Minutes, but who's counting? :-) Enjoyed watching this video -- I felt like I was right there having coffee talk with two of my favorites. Good job!

Nice idea! Try out one of the simple tripods, like a Gorilla, to prevent the shakes in your film clip. :)

Arik! Why didn't you tell me I was rocking back and forth more than a sweet old southern lady sitting on her front porch sipping sweet iced tea?! Sorry about that. You know I'm an animated talker. :)

Thanks again for taking time to meet up and chat. Really enjoyed it!

Matt - Thanks! Means a lot hearing that from you.

Justin - We should start a support group for husbands who get sucked into their wives' small businesses. :)

Allan & Justin - thank God I'm not the only Blackberry user. I feel left out at all the social gatherings where everyone's bumping their phones together and I just sit there seeing if anyone is on BBM, lol.

Nice work, Arik and Dave. I think video adds so much to a blog post and in the future I hope to do fewer video blogs featuring myself and more featuring rock star peers like you and Dave :).

Don't worry, Matt. I don't have an iPhone either. Love my Blackberry except for the trackball -- that's another conversation.

Dave, my wife just started a business too so I can understand the extra work you're talking about. Would be interested in what you all think about "tweet storms" (five or so tweets on a topic you're passionate about) as opposed to a blog post when time is an issue. Something I've been playing around with.

Lastly, great to hear you say the word integrate when talking about incorporating social media into IMC plans. Social media alone usually falls short of the goal. Know your audiences and all that jazz :).

Thanks guys!

Wait, Matt, you don't have an iPhone either? Whew! Arik, glad you caught up with David. You guys could start your own late night cable show on TBS...oh...wait...

This is a great interview and I love the idea. I'm looking forward to watching more of these and keep innovating.

I am loving this new series. Great idea, Arik! I can't wait to see who else you chat with. Thanks for sharing your conversations.

Great idea here Arik - I was thinking of doing something similar (if it doesn't freak people out) when I meet up with folks for coffee/beer to set a camera up for a few minutes and just talk.

1) I must be the last person alive to not have an iphone.

2) David, we do miss you around the blogging scene, but we can all understand that life has a funny way of getting in the way.

3) Thanks for pointing out that Social Media isn't the end all be all - we talk a lot about it, we put it up on a pedestal, but at the end of the day, it's only one (of many) tools. Sometimes it takes simply hearing those words coming out of a person's mouth for it to click.

I respect the heck out of both of you guys and can't wait to meet both of you (hopefully in the near future).
