About this time last year, the first-ever (to my knowledge) PR Reader’s Choice Blog Awards kicked off. The idea was simple: Find a way to publicly recognize some of the great PR blogs we all read every day by way of a community vote.

A number of great blogs and their authors were highlighted last year including Dave Fleet, Sasha MuradaliDavid Mullen and Todd Defren. And I expect nothing less again this year.

So, here’s the deal. Nominate your favorite PR blog in one of the four categories below by next Monday, June 14.

* Best Up-and-Coming Blog (last year’s winner: LAF-Lauren Fernandez)

* Most Educational (last year’s winner: PR 2.0-Brian Solis)

* Most Thought-Provoking (last year’s winner: Danny Brown-Danny Brown)

* Blog of the Year (last year’s winner: PR Squared-Todd Defren)

You can nominate a blog by leaving a comment below–that is the only way comments will be accepted. You can nominate more than one blog, but only one blog per category.

Next Monday, I’ll tally up the nominations. The top five in each category will qualify for the final round and public voting, which will begin on Tuesday, June 15. We’ll vote for a week until EOD Monday, June 21 and winners will be announced on Friday, June 25.

Hope you’ll consider submitting a nomination today!

    * Thought-Provoking: Valeria Maltoni's posts always get me thinking--and sometimes spur a post of my own.

    * Blog of the Year: Gotta go with Todd Defren. He may not post as much as others, but when he does it always stirs up a conversation and it's usually pretty darn smart.

The Most Thought Provoking Blog in the PR sphere isThe Flack, by Peter Himler. Himler doesn't just rehash news and announcements curated from sundry sources. He probes, posits and pushes his readers to ponder the implications of the post. I don't always agree with him, but he's quite often good for generating a new twist or perspective in my mine.

  • Hey there Eric,

Cheers fella, much appreciated kind sir!
  • Juliana_allen
I'd like to nominate PR Nonsense: www.marchpr.com/blog, March Communications' blog, for best up and coming blog.
  • rachelakay
    Really tough here.

Best Up and Coming - wwwPRBreakfastClub.com - This team has done an incredible job of building their site in such a short amount of time. They do a tremendous job of talking about stuff that's difficult and keeping good content flowing.
Most Educational - DannyBrown.me I don't know how he does it, but Danny consistently churns out ridiculous amounts of content that I can't keep up with. The best part is he's introduced me to a lot of new tools and strategies I hadn't known about. I learn a lot from reading his blog.
Most Though Provoking - www.thebuzzbymikeschaffer.com Everything Mike writes makes me go WHERE does he get this stuff. But it's all very entertaining and witty, and hides some really education stuff in there. This blog is unique, and has it's own voice (melding PR with Pop Culture).
Blog of the Year - www.ConversationAgent.com I love Valeria's blog because every post is extremely well thought out, fresh, timely and educational. Her posts not only help us understand communication, but also good overall business practice. I typically read Valeria's posts several times to digest it all. She is a thought leader.
  • mikeschaffer
Thanks!!! I'm totally OK with a WTF thought provoking tone? :)
  • Great choices there, Rach, and so happy I can provide some good stuff for you - makes me smile big :)
  • Scott Hale
Lots of great nominations already, but I haven't seen a few deserving blogs yet -

Up and Coming: The Curbside Marketer - Jackie Adkins (http://www.jackieadkins.com/)

    Educational: Justin Kownacki (http://www.justinkownacki.com/)

Thought-Provoking: Jim's Marketing Blog - Jim Connolly (http://jimsmarketingblog.com/) *don't know how strict you're being on the "PR" side of the award, but Jim is certainly more than relevant to the PR world as lines continue to blur.

Blog of the Year: PR-Squared - Todd Defren (http://www.pr-squared.com/) *Dude seriously deserves a chance at defending his well-earned title.
  • Dude, you rock, thanks for the nomination! Truly flattering to even get a mention. Cheers, Scott!
  • Glad you nominated Todd, Scott. PR Squared is still one of the blogs I visit regularly. And, Todd continues to look for new approaches/ideas. Take his ethics series earlier this year--great idea.

I'd like to nominate March Communications' blog, PR Nonsense, for Best Up-and-Coming:

    http://www.marchpr.com/blog/
  • Susan
I nominate PerkettPR (perkettprsuasion.com) for Most Thought-Provoking. Thanks!
  • Thanks for all of the nominations as I found a couple that were new to me - more excellent reading as I eat my breakfast in NYC.

I'll add in my two cents for Most Educational: Flack's Revenge http://www.flacksrevenge.com/. Bob does a good job of covering lots of different subjects with his own twist.
  • I think Flack's Revenge wins for best blog title, wouldn't you say, Suzanne? ;)
  • Suzanne Mcgee
I would agree. Bob's done a good job of owning Flack.
  • Bob Geller
Thanks Suzanne and Arik - I wrote a piece about the title for Ragans, see: http://bit.ly/9jcyOE
  • Concerned PR Advocate
Do you feel that most PR awards and blogs like this are just a bunch of other PR people promoting each other and slapping each other on the back? PR people are always so "warm/fuzzy" with each other - who actually reads these blogs and benefits from them other than PR people? It's the same people going round and round and round with kudos for each other. How does that generate any client business? These are somewhat pretentious and self-serving, I feel.
  • Any particular reason for the anonymous comment? ;-)

After winning last year, I had three really good clients contact me that wanted to work with me after reading my blog via Arik's "contest".

And trust me, PR people are not all "warm and fuzzy" with each other - I actually see more questions of peers in the PR industry than I do in many others.
  • It's a fair point. And you're right, most PR folks are friendly people who want the best for others. So, it's natural we'd promote our colleagues work. But, to address your concerns:

    * Look back at my post above. The awards are designed as a way to recognize the great PR blogs out there--for PR folks mainly. We're not after CEOs and CFOs here.

    * In addition, these awards weren't designed to generate new business--just a way for us to highlight some of the best blogs in our business. Nothing more. Nothing less.

    * And to your point of the "same people going round and round.." I would actually disagree with that notion a bit. Sure, I recognize a number of people/blogs on this list, but look at the comments. A number of people have commented how they're finding new blogs to read as a result of other folks' nominations. How great is that? Plus, I've seen a few people comment (and a few new bloggers) that I've found new myself.
  • CherylFehlberg
I've got to go with Danny Brown for most thought provoking.
  • Thanks Cheryl, really appreciate that and hope Australia is being good to you. :)
  • if danny brown's blog were a dinosaur it would be an awesomeasaurus :-)

i nominate http://dannybrown.me/ for blog of the year, its the one that over time, i always find myself reading, provokes thinking on a particular topic. fantastic work.

btw, love this post and peoples comments / votes. lots of great resources for people to check out :-)

  • Hey there Mike,

Cheers muchly fella, and always a pleasure to chat with you with you either via Facebook conversations around a topic (and thanks for your great insights), or elsewhere. Once day we'll have to take the conversation offline over a beer. :)
  • Mike Ashworth
works for me, if your schedule bring you to the uk sometime soon, be great to catch-up. take care
  • Done and done. (Though may not be until next summer, but hopefully sooner fella).
  • Damn, Hanson, this is some tough decision-making needed here. Going through the comments, it's almost impossible to separate anything under 20 different blogs. This is not going to be easy. But, here goes...

    * Up-and-Coming - PR Breakfast Club by various (http://prbreakfastclub.com). This could have easily sat in the other categories too, but I think it probably fits here best. For something that came roaring out of the gate less than a year ago, it's tackled some great topics. Its mix of writers mean there's never a dull post, and this is one blog to watch for big things.

    * Educational - Conversation Agent by Valeria Maltoni (http://conversationagent.com). I open up my email and see a new blog post from Valeria, and I know I'm about to have my grey matter tested. She's been knocking information and learning out the park with her blog for a while now, and while she may not be "PR" in the strictest terms (much like my Blog of the Year nominee), I see communications meshing anyway. So Valeria most definitely gets my Educational vote.

    * Thought-Provoking - Communikaytrix by Rachel Kay (http://communikaytrix.com). Rachel's blog is a year old now, and in that time she's consistently broached the subjects many avoid, and definitely asked questions that needed to be asked. Her interviews with industry insiders as well has offered a great insight into how other parts of the PR industry work, and ensures her blog gets my vote.

    * Blog of the Year - Grow Blog by Mark W. Schaefer (http://businessesgrow.com/blog/). How you're meant to separate this lot I'll never know, but there was one name that kept coming to mind as I thought about this, and that was Mark's. Insightful; challenging; wise; solid. All these adjectives and more fit Mark, and I couldn't think of a more suited blog overall for this nomination.

Good luck with the sorting, dude :)
  • I'm with Danny on this one: Blog of the Year - Grow Blog by Mark W. Schaefer (http://businessesgrow.com/blog/).

    My first choice daily read.
  • markwilliamschaefer
My blog has been mentioned several times and I am extremely moved by the support from everyone. Honestly, this comment from Danny is the most cherished feedback I've received in a long time. Thanks so much to everyone for your exceptional kindness!
  • More than welcome, good sir, and just telling it like it is. :)
  • I would like to nominate Little Pink Book PR (www.littlepinkbookpr.com) by Sasha Muradali for Most Thought-Provoking.
  • Aww, thank you very much Ashley. I really appreciate that! :)
  • kschutrop
I'm not sure what the requirements are for the Up-and-Coming category, but I'd like to nominate Sasha Halima's blog, Little Pink Book PR. I love her blog because she covers current PR trends and news with a fresh voice and incorporates topics on pop culture creating an overall great mix of content. http://sashahalima.com/blog/

    Thanks, Arik!
  • It really brightens my day to read that you like to read and appreciate my stuff. Thank you so much! :)

  • Thanks, Katie. I think Sasha's blog qualifies for that category--although she was nominated in that same category last year, too. Good sign of a quality blog.
  • Cheryl Savit
I am nominating Perkett Persuasion, the excellent blog from PerkettPR (www.perkettprsuasion.com), for most thought-provoking PR Blog. They always present interesting topics, great links, and Christine Perkett is a great writer with a lot of insight.
  • Cheryl, I owe you one - thank you so much!!
  • AbbieF
Most Educational -- definitely my friend Jay Baer, www.convinceandconvert.com. I learn something new everyday.

Most Thought-Provoking -- for me, this has to be Gini Dietrich's www.spinsucks.com. She engages, communicates, and really makes me think.

Can I put our blog in the running? www.hmatime.com. A mix of industry stuff, client stuff and our opinions.
  • Thanks Abbie!! xoxo
  • Tough to make these kinds of choices isn't it? How much is popularity and how much is genuine? I don't envy you having to make the call Arik. Here are my votes:

Most Educational - http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/ - Not strictly PR, and sometimes an aggregate, but so much important info there.

Most Thought-Provoking - Well I was going to nominate Amber Naslund's Altitude blog but she's changing it to - http://www.brasstackthinking.com - which will undoubtedly be just as interesting.

Blog of the Year - I have to go with Jay Baer for http://www.convinceandconvert.com/ who consistently teaches and inspires us.

Of course, I support our agency blog http://www.dontdrinkthekoolaidblog.com/ - just not sure of the category!
  • Thanks for the nominations, Indra. I don't make the calls on the blogs that win--we'll be posting finalists next week and the community will vote for the winners. Just we did last year. Good luck!
  • Most Educational - John Haydon (http://johnhaydon.com). While it's difficult for anyone to top last year's winner (Brian Solis), John Haydon does an outstanding job educating readers. His use of visually appealing ascetics, video, and buckets of personality make it one of the best educational resources for anyone looking to integrate new media into their traditional communications efforts. Don't let the nonprofit emphasis fool you - the strategies and tactics he discusses are applicable across sectors.
  • Thanks for nominating John's blog. As a 12for12k supporter, I know all about John. But, I don't read his stuff nearly often enough.
  • Johanna
I would like to nominate PerkettPR (perkettprsuasion.com) for Most Thought-Provoking. Thank you
  • Cydia M.
I would like to nominate Little Pink Book PR by Sasha Muradali for Most Thought-Provoking.
  • Thank you for the nomination Cydia! :)
  • Up and Coming: PR Breakfast Club, getting lots of votes and hard to disagree.

Most Educational: I learn so much from Jay Baer (Convince and Convert) and Amber Naslund (Altitude Branding). Consider myself well-schooled.

Most thought provoking: Tie with Mark Schaefer (GROW) and Gini Dietrich (FADS: SpinSucks).. they'll make you think, whether you want to or not. ;-)

Blog of the Year: Danny Brown. Just awesomesauce that I could - and do - read all the time.

A little indecisive, ticket-splitting but that's okay, right?
  • Anytime I'm mentioned in the same sentence as Mark, I am happy, happy, happy. Thanks Davina!
  • "Awesomesauce" - ha, love it! Thanks kindly, Davina, and always love hearing your thoughts over at the blog too :)
  • Welcome!
  • Kris Schindler
Bailey Gardiner at http://www.dontdrinkthekoolaidblog.com/ cautions us to think for ourselves and serves up thinking that's generated by their entire team. They get my vote for MOST THOUGHT-PROVOKING because what I read from them lingers in my head.

Jay Baer at http://convinceandconvert.com is Chief Educator for many PR professionals looking for advice and tips in digital realm. He gets my vote for MOST EDUCATIONAL.

Gini Dietrich at http://www.spinsucks.com has earned my vote as BLOG OF THE YEAR because she demonstrates great integrated practices that PR professionals should adopt (like expanding her #FF Twitter list with descriptions on her blog) and because she's real, forthcoming and engages in and promotes civil discourse.
  • LOL! Unless the discourse is about wearing jeans when you speak. Then it's not so civil. But thank you!
  • Thanks for the nominations Kris. Jay and Gini's blogs are definitely two of my personal favorites. And from the looks of it, I'm not the only one. ;)
  • Thanks for the vote Kris!

Blog of the year: The Fight Against Destructive Spin F.A.D.S by Gini Dietrich - http://www.spinsucks.com/
  • I'm the wrong person to do this because I look for nuggets, not necessarily popular blogs. I also shy away from blogs as competitions, but I think Justin Kownacki needs to be in there for though provoking. (http://www.justinkownacki.com/) Educational, I'd agree with Social Media Examiner. Mike has done a great job with a new blog that is now one of the tops in the industry. Blog of the Year? Could be one of about 5 for me. Convince and Convert, Altitude Branding, Conversation Agent ... hard to single one out. Up and coming? No one had heard of Mark Schaeffer last year and he's a player now. Not sure if that qualifies, but I dig his stuff. David Spinks should also be in that category, I think.

But what do I know? Heh.
  • Thanks for the noms, Jason. Your Blog of the Year suggestions are all solid--and you're right, hard to single out just one. Would definitely put you in that mix, by the way.
  • I know Danny Brown won last year, but I second Valerie's nomination of him. He's so smart and ahead of the times. Every time he does something, I wish I'd thought of it first.

    I'd also add
    * Jon Buscall - http://jontusmedia.com - even though he's in Sweden, I think what he offers our industry is top-notch.
    * Jay Baer - http://convinceandconvert.com - and agree with Adam, though he's not strictly PR, he offers great advice and tips
    * Jeff Bullas - http://jeffbullas.com - because, as a Brit, he offers a more worldly view of our profession
    * Mark Schaefer - http://businessgrow.com - because, well, he's freaking brilliant.

I know that's five (and, of course, I nominate FADS) so I hope I'm not cheating.
  • Wow, thanks so much :)
I'm chuffed to be included with these guys.
  • Ha, but I grab my ideas from your notebook, Gini ;-)

And thank you - really appreciate the very kind words. :)
  • It is cheating, Gini. But, I will overlook it just this once ;)

Great nominations--a few of those I haven't read before so I'm finding some new gems through this process, too!
  • valeriesimon
So many great blogs... as with last year, I am sure that I will be adding any nominees not already in my Google Reader :) Here are a few of my picks

    Best Up and Coming: http://laurennovo.wordpress.com/
    Most Educational: http://www.deirdrebreakenridge.com
    Most Thought-Provoking: http://www.conversationagent.com
    Blog of the Year: http;//www.PRBreakfastClub.com

And can I suggest an additional category for the most inspiring blog? Danny Brown's blog has been a tremendous source of inspiration for me on so many levels this year!
  • Awww, thanks Valerie (and you too, Mr Hanson). Glad to be "of service", and I'll try my best not to disappoint. :)
  • Thanks Valerie!
  • I think most people that read Danny's stuff find it inspirational. Great suggestion, Valerie!
  • Unintentionally going to piggy back off of Lauren, but I genuinely believe in these nominations!

Best Up and Coming Blog - Adam Vincenzini, thecommscorner.com - flattered by his compliment to nominate me, however I've found myself turning to Adam's blog numerous times for it's diverse content, lists and how-to's you simply cannot find anywhere else.

Most Educational - I'd also have to nominate Deirdre's blog (deirdrebreakenridge.com) definitely look up to Deirdre after #PRStudChat and her thought leadership in PR. Have learned quite a lot from what she has to say!

Most Thought Provoking: I'm going to nominate David Spinks here - davidspinks.com I've lurked for quite some time. I think David is extremely smart in the social media realm, and he poses open-ended questions, which always leads to dynamic discussion.

I will have to come back to vote on Blog of The Year....I have a few in mind I'd like to narrow down :)
